What is a stroke?
A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function. This is due to a disruption in the blood supply to the brain causing brain cells in the affected area to die. Because your brain controls everything you say, do and think, a stroke can have a lot of different effects. How well you recover from a stroke depends on how much and what parts of your brain were damaged along with many other factors.
What are the effects?
Both speech (motor planning and muscle movements) and language (symbolic communication) can be affected after a stroke.
How we can help
The communication effects of stroke can be frustrating and isolating as it is difficult for others to understand how it feels to lose the ability to communicate. At Beyond Words Speech-Language Pathology, we can help you re-establish a way of interacting with your community, family and friends. A therapy plan will be designed to promote your areas of strength while supporting your areas of need. Educating and training your family to support your communication is key, as communication is a shared activity. We can examine where technology can support and improve your communication.
